It’s been a little over a week since Well Fest began at Salve Regina University and Theresa Brown, associate director of Residential Life is quite excited at the response. “It’s just a fun way to educate,” says Brown, who lists upcoming events such as the Can I Kiss You Now and Fatal Vision programs as the top two events of this year’s Well Fest.
Students have the opportunity to take advantage of aerobics classes and other recreation classes that are continuing throughout the semester, along with “fit stops” that allow a different health aspect to be taught every Thursday from noon to 1:30 pm in the Wakehust lobby.
Nicole Girouard, a Resident Assistant in Hunt Hall has been inspired by the Well Fest event and has created a program for her residents based on the premise of wellness. “Well Fest is a great concept, especially for college students, who don’t always make the healthiest choices.” For the residents of Hunt Hall, Girouard will be hosting,”Eat Your Fruits and Veggies,” which will give tips on how to eat healthier.
Brown says that other residences are getting involved, with Carnlough Cottage hosting a healthy eating program, in which a nutritionist will be available to help students learn how to prepare healthy meals. Fatal Vision will be the highlight of Well Fest, where students will be able to navigate a golf cart in Rodgers parking lot using fatal vision goggles that simulate different blood-alcohol content levels.
This “experiential” experiment will allow students to truly understand how their body reacts to alcohol when driving. This event will take place on Wednesday, March 16 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Can I Kiss You Now program will be held on Wednesday, March 2 at 2 and 7 p.m. and will feature Michael Domitrz, an acclaimed public speaker and presenter.
Brown looks forward to the future of Well Fest and will make it an annual event based on the response of this year’s programs. “You can’t go wrong because it’s good for you,” says Brown.
