2. Dinner and a Show at the Newport Playhouse
Since 1983, the family-owned Newport Playhouse has been a favorite of tourists and locals alike. Through its offerings of a buffet, a variety of plays, a full bar, and a cabaret, it is clear that the Playhouse knows how to entertain and satisfy its guests. Not only can this dream come true, but it can be achieved for free every Thursday evening throughout the summer with a group called newportFILM. Presented by Lila Delman Real Estate International and in collaboration with organizations like the Newport Historical Society and the Newport Art Museum, newportFILM shows screenings of award-winning documentaries under the stars every week at a variety of breathtaking locations. 4. Picnic at Castle Hill Lighthouse
Nestled in a corner off of Ocean Drive, you can find a little piece of heaven at the Castle Hill Lighthouse. A perfect spot to bring a date, the lighthouse provides the ambience of cutesy seaside charm with a combination of awe-inspiring views of the Pell Bridge. Picnic tables beg for passersby to sit down and enjoy some outdoor dining. Castle Hill is the place to go if you need to unwind, relax and take a photo or two.
5. Jam at the Newport Jazz Festival
For a city known for its festivals and fairs, the Newport Jazz Festival is probably one of its most popular. With jazz great Duke Ellington claiming that he “was born at the Newport Jazz Festival”, who wouldn’t want to experience a touch of culture on such hallowed ground? A few of this year’s featured artists are Norah Jones, Galactic and Gregory Porter. The festival will be serving up some groovy Jazz tunes from July 29th until the 31st at Fort Adams State Park. 6. Run at the Craft Brew Races
If the way to your heart is through a tall glass of beer, don’t worry! All you have to do is run for it. This event allows runners who are 21 and over to experience a 5k course full of the island’s scenic views, as well as the fun of sampling craft brews from 20 plus breweries. All participants win a medal which doubles as a bottle opener. This event, happening on July 16th, is sure to be a blast, because it celebrates the power of buying local and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
