Multicultural Organization to Participate in Leadership Conference

Salve Regina’s Multicultural Student Organization is a powerful group that serves to provide racially and ethnically diverse students a place to thrive in the Salve community.

The group’s role at Salve Regina is to promote a culturally diverse atmosphere, enriching its members through dinners, retreats, presentations, and other special events. MSO has been confronted with a wonderful opportunity for their members this fall semester.

On November 12th and 13th, 11 students and two chaperones will be attending the 2004 Millennium leadership conference. This retreat will be held at Clark University in Worcester, MA, and its participants will include members from universities all over New England.

Co-chairman of this conference at Clark University says, “The primary aim of the conference is to bring students of various racial and ethnic backgrounds together to learn how to bridge the economic gap between whites and racial minorities.”

Members of the Multicultural Student Organization, or MSO, are clearly looking forward to participating in this seminar. Sister Marianna Sylvester, overseeing the trip for the MSO, notes that this conference will include many events and activities, and thus be extremely beneficial for its members.

“In this setting, participating students will be able to network and partake in workshops that will enable them to acquire the skills required for effective leadership. Through a series of workshops, each participant will leave with a better understanding of themselves and how to lead with a sense of purpose.”

In addition to the advantageous workshops these students will attend, they also have the opportunity to listen to a very interesting and unique keynote speaker. Ms. Yvonne Bynoe, President of the Urban Think Tank, will lecture the group on racial and ethnic issues in society.

Her most acclaimed work, “Stand and Deliver: Political Activism, Leadership, and Hip Hop Culture” serves to offer a viewpoint on how hip-hop icons influence the youth and what exactly is meant by “leadership” in our society. The ceremony will be concluded with a formal dinner dance on November 13th.
