The WSRU studio has come to life again in Wakehurst Student Center. The light is back on and the studio is no longer just a dark window.

After several years of silence on the airwaves of WSRU, the music is finally back this semester. Students have been working with Bart Carithers, Director of Student Activities, to accomplish this. The station officially went back on the air on January 24th. So far, things have been running smoothly.

Bryan Belmore, a junior here at Salve Regina University, is one DJ at the station.

“It has been going well. The response that I’ve gotten so far has been all positive. The same goes for some of the other DJs I’ve talked to who have had people calling in wanting to hear more and wanting to know how to get involved,” Bryan said.

Bryan’s show, “Eclectic Mayhem” can be heard Tuesday and Thursday nights from 8-11:30.

DJ Adia Sovie, a sophomore, agrees. “It has been a lot of fun. I have learned a lot and it has been a great experience.” She has a show with sophomore Katie Miller on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-12 a.m.

As for the listeners, they have enjoyed what they have been hearing. However, there are some things they would like to see improve.

“My only compliant is that the station is not officially on the radio,” says Steve Farina, a senior. Right now, the station is on channel 68 on the television.

Sophomore Laura Mellyn agrees and adds that the radio should be able to be heard off campus as well. The radio station is off to a good start by being on the air again, but hopefully it will continue to improve.

Fellow Sophomore Shane Falcone brings up an important point. “The station has the opportunity to give their listeners information of what’s going on around campus. If leaders of Salve let the station have an opportunity to speak their mind, the station could be a force in the community,” he says.

Currently, WSRU is on the air Sunday through Friday during the afternoon and evening hours. The request lines are open at these times at extensions 2452 and 5450.

If you are interested in having your own show, there are still time slots open. Contact Bart Carithers at extension 2225, or stop by his office at the garden level of the Wakehurst Student Center for more information.

Cayte Burdick is a DJ on WSRU. Listen to her show, “Cling and Clatter” on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
