NEW YORK CITY- Last Sunday, Salve hosted a field trip to NYC for a day of shopping, and for some students, it was an unforgettable experience.

The campus activities board at Salve offers a variety of field trips to all

students. The trip two weeks ago was a shopping trip to New York City, the bus arrived at around 1 p.m. and departed at around 7 p.m.

Students who attended had the entire day to tour the city at their leisure. Given only a number to call for an emergency and a list of inexpensive restaurants, the students had five hours to do whatever they desired.

Andrea Balser, a sophomore and psychology major, attended the trip. Andrea is from a small town in Mass. and Sunday was her first time in the city.

“I expected it to be very busy and crowded,” said Andrea when she first arrived. Andrea and her friends decided to visit Greenwich Village first. The bus let the students off at 51st Street and Greenwich

Village was on 2nd Ave.

The walk was very long, but Andrea did not mind she said, “I enjoyed looking at everything as we walked.” Andrea also stopped in many boutiques and shops on the way.

She admired the diverse styles and commented by saying, “I was not surprised with the prices, the city is not overpriced”.

When they arrived in Greenwich Village, after two hours of walking, Andrea and her friends were hungry. Unfamiliar with the Village, they had no idea where to have dinner.

They walked 5th Ave. stopping in almost every restaurant that looked reasonable but they could not agree on one. Finally, when they saw a restaurant half way down 5th and 2nd Ave., called The Grill, they went into it.

To their surprise, The Grill was a trendy Bar. Too scared to move Andrea and her friends froze in their spots. Upon turning for the door a drunk man, dropped to his hands and knees and grabbed Andrea’s feet. “Do not leave, stay, do not go,” the man yelled.

Andrea was disgusted and pulled away from the man, and ran out of the pub. “That freaked me out,” she told her friends. But a few minutes later she forgot the incident and laughed about it over lunch at Subway.

Andrea did not get uncomfortable when the city became dark. “I liked the city at night the best because of all the lights” she said. Andrea was too intrigued by all of the glowing billboards and signs that towered her.

They walked around in the dark, taking in the scenery and admiring the diversity of all the people who passed them on the street.

When it was time to meet at the bus on 51st street, Andrea was exhausted and could not wait to get home. Andrea said, “I would love

to visit the city, and maybe move here after college, but not now.”

Andrea was happy because she had the opportunity to experience the city, but after a long day of walking and visiting a new place, she was ready to return home.
