As you’re driving around campus this fall, you may notice a little more action on Brother Reynolds field. This newly renovated soccer field has brought the Seahawk’s soccer action from Fort Adams to the Salve campus. Both the men and women’s teams will play their home games on the new field.
According to Del Malloy, Director of Athletics, the field has always been there, but has been in poor condition. The previous field had drainage problems, which would result in the loss of the field for a period of days after rainy weather.
Reconstruction began in the spring of 2004, by Mello Construction, and cost around $300,000.
“I am most thankful that Sister Therese allowed us to rebuild this and the Lawrence Avenue Field. It is important for a number of reasons to play as many sports as possible on campus,” said Malloy.
Women’s soccer coach Lisa Yenush is also happy to be playing games on campus this year. “I feel we are very fortunate that the University was willing to invest in a high quality field on campus. The new drainage system works extremely well and the condition of the field is excellent,” said Yenush.
Coach Yenush also noted that the amount of fans at this year’s first home game had increased due to the fact that the field is more easily accessible than Fort Adams.
Athletes also have less academic conflicts with practice and games as they are able to stay in class longer than if they had to travel to Fort Adams. When asked if there has been any conflict with sharing the field with the men’s team, Yenush answered, “In terms of sharing it with the men it has not been an issue at all. In addition to the main field we were able to put a smaller practice field to the side which is ideal for practice sessions. The two teams just split the time between the two areas.”
Men’s soccer coach Keith Cory also expressed his happiness and said he is grateful for the newly reconstructed field. “The reconstructed field, with its drainage and irrigation systems, places us among the top grass facilities in the C.C. Conference. There is no doubt that it drains better and will aid in the performance of our athletes and greatly reduce field related injuries,” said Cory.
Coach Cory also expressed his thankfulness to Del Malloy and Sister Therese for making the field a reality, and also to Lenny Mercier and the Grounds Department for their work and maintenance of the field. “We are thankful for our supporters who traveled off-campus to watch us play at Fort Adams these past three seasons and trust that they will continue to attend our games on campus,” Cory said. “To those of you readers who have yet to see us compete, please stop by to see what we have to offer.”
Also, look for the men’s lacrosse and baseball games that will also be played at Brother Reynolds field on Lawrence Ave.
