NEWPORT, R.I.- The Student Government Association officially named Chris “Naples” Hudson the winner of the election for the 2006-2007 executive board president.

Hudson is a politics major whose goal is to install a sense of community on Salve Regina’s campus.

Salve students participated in the Student Government Association presidential election for the second time this year. Tony Vellucci ’08 was announced SGA president after the April 19 polls closed, but the title was short-lived. After members of the Student Government Association and Salve students examined the legitimacy of the voting procedures. the election was deemed invalid and the SGA board opted to open the polls again to students on May 3.

Inconsistencies of time found on voting posters and the failure to include the votes of part-time students were causes for the re-vote. A similar case occurred in the spring election of 2003 and likewise SGA issued a recall of ballots. This year’s presidential candidates included Tony Vellucci ’08, Chris “Naples” Hudson ’07 and Kate E. Grenci ’07..

Concern about whether students would re-vote due to lost interest in the elections proved unfounded, and participation remained comparable to the initial election. Salve student Amanda Cuda ’07 chose to re-vote to support the important role of SGA at Salve Regina. “I feel it’s important to re-vote to maintain credibility,” Cuda said. “However, it’s unfortunate any student should be given a title only to have it taken away.”
