Members of Salve men’s basketball team huddle up during the second half of their game vs. Johson and Wales Univeristy on Thursday. The Seahawks lost 66-60
The women’s basketball team took advantage of their home court in the first double header of the season at Rogers Recreation Center. The lady Seahawks topped Johnson and Wales University 81-60 in the first game of the night while the men dropped a 66-60 decision to the visitors in the second game.
Junior point guard and three-year starter Allegra Lovoy led the Seahawk women scoring a game high 20 points and dishing out six assists. Lovoy also added 11 boards as the Seahawks out rebounded JWU 63-41. “I thought we played pretty well, but we can play better,” Lovoy said. “Rebounds were huge. We prevented them from getting second chances.” The Seahawks exploited their own second chances scoring 46 points on extended possessions. Senior captains Kristen Stone and Allie Moen anchored the frontcourt for Salve each recording double-doubles. Stone notched 18 points and 13 rebounds while Moen added 10 points and 10 boards. The women are off to a 3-1 start under the direction of first year coach Cori Hughes. “What excites me is the potential this women’s basketball program has for greatness,” Hughes said of her new team. And with three games to go in the first semester, Lovoy is also happy about where her team stands. “We’re headed in the right direction,” she said. The men however are still trying to find their direction after dropping three of their first four contests. Trouble started early Thursday night for the men’s team when leading scorer and senior center Steve Walsh (18 points) picked up two fouls early in a first half that saw 10 lead changes. But 10 first half points by junior guard Joe DeSantis pushed the Seahawks into halftime up one, 36-35. A made free throw by junior Justine Woodworth knotted the score at 48 with 11 minutes and 7 seconds to go in the second half but the Seahawks couldn’t get any closer in front of a 400 plus home crowd at Rogers. The men will now hit the road for two in state games against Roger Williams University on Tuesday and Rhode Island College on Thursday and then wrap up the first semester at home Saturday, December 8 against Connecticut College.
