Coconut Records release sophomore album “Davy.”

If you are looking for some good tunes to warm you up during this frigid New England winter, look no farther than Coconut Records’ sophomore album, “Davy,” released on Jan. 20, 2009.

Coconut Records is actor and musician, Jason Schwartzman’s solo project. He is best known for his roles in Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited and Marie Antoinette. Schwartzman was also the drummer in the band Phantom Planet until 2003. He makes a sly reference to this in his song “Drummer,” a Beatle-esque piece with horn and piano ensemble.

While listening to Coconut Records you are magically transported to a beach in California, palm trees swaying in the warm breeze as your toes sink into the soft sand. Everything about this music makes you feel happy. Coconut Records is catchy without being annoying. You’ll be humming the melodies in your head after listening to “Davy,” but in a good way. While the tunes are amazingly done, Schwartzman also has a knack for writing great lyrics, which is a breath of fresh air after listening to generic pop lyrics over and over again on the radio.

It is clear that Schwartzman is a pop machine, and he should get more exposure for being a musician than he does. Most people only know him as the actor. While it is cliché to be both an actor and musician, Schwartzman proves to be genuinely talented in both arenas. Not only does he play most of the instruments himself, but he also produces his own albums on his label, Young Baby Records. Schwartzman is not going away any time soon.

So pause Britney’s “Circus” on your iPods and give “Davy” a try. You won’t be disappointed, and you might just hear something you like. If you enjoy the album check out his debut from 2007, “Nighttiming,” which is just as enjoyable to listen to, if not more.
