Hey Salve, What’s New?

By Kaitlyn Boisvert and Ally Boucher –

Although the month of October is coming to a close, the number of events and activities featured at the University has not dwindled, and students and faculty alike have many opportunities to still make October a memorable month at Salve Regina.

For those who wish to get in the Halloween spirit, the University is sponsoring a few events to help people truly get the holiday feel. On Oct. 25, students can attend a screening of the film The Shining from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., an event sponsored by the Salve English Department. The movie will be shown in the Distenfano Hall of Antone, and to be admitted, students must either bring a canned good or dress in costume. Following the screening will be a costume contest.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, students can get the chance to feast on Halloween-themed delicacies and relax with friends at the “Waffle-ween” event, sponsored by the Mercy Center. The event will take place at 6 p.m. in the Mercy Center for Spiritual life room in the basement of the Chapel. There will also be pumpkin decorating, and attendees will be able to choose their toppings for their waffles.

Also on Oct. 26 will be a Slam Poetry event at 7 p.m. in Wakehurst. The event will be hosted by Carlos Robson, who has had a lot of experience competing in Slam Poetry events. This event is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board Committee, and will allow students to have fun with their peers and experience poetry in a unique way.

All of the witches and zombies will be out for the annual Halloween Dance next Friday, Oct. 28, 2011.   Salve Regina University’s most popular dance will be a good time with everyone dressed in their Halloween costumes, from sailors to television characters.  All of the tickets for the dance sold out within three days, according to Salve Student Activities. Salve’s own WSRU will be the disc jockey for the night and spinning the latest and greatest hits.  The event will be held at Ochre Court from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Another event that can help students get into the season spirit is the Saturday Mashup on Oct. 29 in Wakehurst, where the theme will be ghosts and golf.
