You knew you wanted to come to Newport, a place of beaches and beauty in scenic New England. After trekking all of Newport’s beaches and taking in the picturesque views of Ocean Drive, you’re beginning to wonder what else this city by the sea has to offer. If appreciating nature’s beauty is for you, here are five places you must visit on the island.
Hanging Rock
This is for all those adventurous in spirit. Hanging Rock, in Middletown RI is a huge point that overlooks Second Beach all the way to the bird sanctuary. A 25-30 minute hike through gorgeous wooded trails, bridges over swamps, and some pretty intense rock climbing will take you to an overlook point. Here, you can inhale the salty air and clear your head with beautiful views that make the world below seem miniscule.
Purgatory Chasm
Not for the faint of heart, this gap in the cliffs overlooks second beach and is truly one of nature’s wonders. You can park right near the point and walk 2-3 minutes down a path that looks out onto Second Beach in its entirety. The chasm is about a 3-story plunge that only the bravest souls dare to jump, with its narrow passageway and jagged cliffs. Make sure to cross over the bridge and explore the trails where ocean, cliffs, and woods come together.
Ruggles Beach
Legendary for its surf break, Ruggles Beach is right at the end of Ruggles St. on the Salve Regina campus, a great spot for on-campus explorers. The beach is small, but secluded and private, comprised of mostly rocks with some sandy spots for laying a towel. The perfect place to unwind after a long day with a beautiful ocean view and sometimes, the opportunity to watch surfers!
Ledge Road
A road near Reject’s Beach and Ocean Drive, Ledge Road offers an entrance to the cliff walk and several ecosystems to explore. With its grassy trail above the large ocean dipped rocks, it is an ideal spot to fish, go for a stroll, or challenge yourself to climb the rocks. Another beautiful ocean view here lets all your worries sail out into the salty ocean abyss.
The Tower on Ocean Drive
A true Newporter’s oasis: the two-story tower, located behind the Brenton Point Park on Ocean Drive. Following the path by the abandoned stables, tower visitors can enjoy woodland views on a wide carved out trail to this medieval-looking tower. The stairs that wrap halfway around the tower are a molehill to conquer once you see the view. The curvy road of Ocean Drive traces the coast line and brings your gaze, once again onto the beautiful ocean.
