“11 humans, five puppets and a swamp,” only begins to describe the story about loss of innocence and curiosity found in Laura Jacqmin’s 10 virgins. According to Playscripts Inc., the play, to be presented by Salve Regina University Department Of Music, Theatre, & Dance this week, follows Marchen and her nine sisters who grow up in a swamp after their mother’s tragic disappearance. The sisters live a life of contentment until a mysterious witch, Jenny Greenteeth, forces Marchen to question if her destiny lies beyond her isolated life in the swamp. When the youngest sister disappears, Marchen is left to uncover the truth. Will she betray her sisters and leave her life behind in order to discover her own destiny?
Inspired by classic fairy tales and folklore, “10 Virgins” is more than a story of sisterhood. Rather, it explores what it means to discover our destiny and the consequences that result from the roads we choose to travel.
The cast includes 11 women who began their rehearsals during the second week of September. Since then, they have devoted nine hours per week to perfecting their performance.
“A lot of work goes into the production and there are a lot of people backstage and onstage,” explains Dani Pantoliano, who will be playing “Little H” come opening night.
The play will be performed at the Casino Theatre on October 24-26 at 8p.m. and October 26-27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $5 for Salve Regina students, faculty and staff and $10 for general admission.
