Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice: Makeup Trends for Fall

By Lily Jones | Staff Writer

Fall is the season of change, as well as the season of fashion. As we girls transition from shorts and flip-flops to pants and boots, it is important for us to keep in mind that what we wear on our bodies is not the only thing that changes with seasonal trends. What we wear on our faces – our makeup – changes too.

While the summertime calls for brightly colored, warm-toned lip colors like coral pink and fluorescent fuchsia, autumn lip shades are pretty much the opposite. Cool-toned, darker pinks and even purples are the norm for the fall. Mauve, a musky pink color, is a great option for those that are too bashful to go bold.

Statement lips are a fall favorite in fashion year after year. Many models rock “vampy” lipstick, a word used to describe shades of wine red and burgundy. What’s becoming more popular this fall is deep, dark purple. This may be over the top for most girls to wear to class day-to-day, but it is a stunning option for weekends and special events. The mentality for Fall 2014 seems to the darker, the better. Even black lipstick has been used more and more frequently in fashion magazines, a color most reserve for Halloween only.

In addition to the bold lip trend, bold eyebrows are making a comeback this year. Thick brows, like those belonging to model Cara Delevingne and actress Lily Collins, can be seen in many magazines and on many runways. However, you do not need to be genetically blessed in order to rock a bold brow this season. Brow pencils, powders, and crèmes can fill in sparse areas and help you achieve a strong, defined look.

Both bold brows and dark lip colors can look great together, but it is important not to overload your face with product. If your brows and lips are intense, you may want to wear minimal makeup on your eyes and cheeks. Balance is key to pulling off a fierce fall look.
