There comes a time in nearly every person’s life where they have exhausted Netflix and have to resort to cable television for a new show to watch. Luckily, many new shows are premiering this fall, and it seems as though there’s a show for every kind of person out there. Whether you’re partial to light-hearted comedies, action thrillers, or cliff-hanging dramas, you can find your new must-see program in the new primetime line-up.
If you enjoy TV shows like Scandal or Grey’s Anatomy, you may be interested in watching ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder. Shonda Rhimes, the woman who created Olivia Pope and Meredith Grey, brings to life a new strong female protagonist, Annalise Keating, played by Viola Davis (as seen in The Help). The show follows Keating, a lawyer and professor of law, showcasing her professional and personal life. As the title suggests, this show is based around murder and malice, just like its predecessor Scandal.
Batman fans may be interested in watching Gotham, a somewhat different take on the superhero’s life, airing on Fox. The series follows Detective James Gordon, portrayed by Ben McKenzie (of The OC and Southland fame), as he tracks down the murderer of a young Bruce Wayne’s parents. The series depicts the origin of Batman as well as many of his enemies, including the Penguin, who is a member of the mafia on the show.
ABC’s Selfie is a new half-hour sitcom that may appeal to fans of shows like Modern Family and Suburgatory, as well as to frequent users of social media. The main character, Eliza Dooley, played by Karen Gillan, is obsessed with achieving notoriety on social networking sites, and seeks help from a rebranding guru, Henry Higgs (John Cho) in order to find what is truly meaningful in life.
The American Horror Story franchise on FX is not new to television; however, the anthology series has a different plot and characters each season. The highly anticipated American Horror Story: Freak Show will premiere this fall. The show will take place at a carnival where several “freaks” will be featured, most notably conjoined twins (played by Sarah Paulson) and a bearded lady (Kathy Bates). Many of the other recurring cast, including Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, and Gabourey Sidibe will be retuning as well.
No matter if you like action, horror, comedy, or drama television series, you are sure to find something to obsess over this upcoming TV season. You may even want to give your Netflix account a break.
