A College Student’s Guide to Procrastination

By Hannah Montero | Staff Writer

College students are the masters of procrastination. Why do they procrastinate? No one knows, but they do so very often. When it’s time to study or get assignments done, some go to the library, some go to a cafe or others prefer going home because they feel more comfortable.

While embarking on this procrastination journey, students think of doing everything that they never do in their free time. It appears that procrastinators love working under pressure.

1. Taking a nap is at the top of the list because having a lot to read and study isn’t something you enjoy; therefore you become bored and instantly tired. Taking a nap always seems like the best option because no one likes being sleep deprived.

2. Netflix Binging on your favorite shows is never a bad idea until you’re finished with two entire seasons and then you realize that your paper is due in less than two hours. Then you regret not doing your tasks before starting to watch Netflix and you waste another hour feeling bad for yourself.

3. While laundry could be done on the weekend or in your free time, it suddenly becomes on the top of your priority list. You start thinking that you do not have enough clothes for the week or you need a clothing item that is dirty. When in reality, you do not need anything from your dirty laundry and you should be doing more important things.

4. Cleaning is better than having to do your work. Even though you’re not a clean freak or care how your room looks, it’s always nice to have something to do. You might intentionally leave things all over the place because you are too lazy pick them up. When you have so much to do, you automatically want to make sure everything is in order.

5. Logging on to any social media site is never a good idea. These sites include anything from Facebook to Twitter, Instagram, Buzzfeed, Pinterest and the list goes on. Telling yourself that you will only spend about ten to fifteen minutes online is definitely a lie and you know it. These sites are excessively addicting and you cannot help yourself but waste about two to three hours of your life.

6. Shopping. Whether you are actually buying online or just browsing the stores and placing items in your cart for future purchases. Browsing the web for things you might potentially buy is a fun hobby for many people and it keeps them distracted. Most of the time you don’t actually buy the items that you place in your cart, but you still like to shop around.

7. Procrastinating leaves you frustrated and is certainly not a good idea, but people do it anyway. Breaking the bad habit of being a procrastinator is tough and more than likely will forever be a challenge. Sometimes you really just need to sit down and get your work done instead of wasting time doing pointless stuff. Think about it. You would be stress free and you would have a lot of free time if you didn’t waste it trying to distract yourself.
