The Salve Regina University Student Government Association met on February 9, 2016 at 7pm to discuss various student affairs. Here are the five most important points touched upon during that meeting.
1. Gym Hours
Jody Mooradian, recently appointed Director of Athletics at Salve, spoke with SGA about her efforts to improve the workout facilities in Rodgers and to get feedback about its current state. Vice President Lauren Healy brought up the first issue. “A big concern that we have heard about is the new hour cut back at the gym,” Healy said.
Mooradian established that she is working to make the gym personnel more efficient, and is interested in knowing what times the workout facilities are most popular. Mooradian told SGA that she had been working on installing card swipes for Rogers Recreation, which could potentially track hours of activity, and lead to the adjustment of gym hours.
President Patricia Socarras commented that changes to gym hours will most likely not be happening this semester due to budget constraints.
The current gym hours as are as follows:
Monday through Thursday – 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday – 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday – 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
2. #DearSalveSGA
The SGA Public Relations Committee has been working diligently to reach students through the #DearSalveSGA hashtag. Senator Ming Congdon said, “We want to promote it as a way for students to reach out to us.” Students can use the hashtag to voice their concerns or make suggestions to the Student Government directly.
3. Lift Time Schedules
SGA is working to get an updated schedule of when athletic teams lift together in order to decrease gym congestion during those times. “That would only be widely effective if it was updated regularly,” said President Patricia Socarras.
4. Sodexo Statement
Senator Katie Gillespie has been working with Sodexo to release a statement after the Salve Chapter of the Odyssey released a blog post criticizing their quality of food. “They are more interested in releasing a statement that informs the students of the direct ways to reach Sodexo,” said Gillespie. Gillespie said she would look into a direct e-mail or live chat option for students to voice their concerns about on-campus dining.
Gillespie also mentioned that she is working on scheduling a Dining Services Open Forum for students in the near future.
