5 Stand-Out Classes to Check Out for Fall 2016

With the stress of class registration upon us, it is easy to get caught under pressure and sign up for classes that just aren’t your style. If you are like me, this time of the year is probably one of your busiest. You have research papers to polish, finals to tackle, and social events to attend. However, in between all of that you must decide your academic future. So, what does that future hold? Are you stocking up on core requirements? Are you trying to fill a theme? Do you want to learn something fresh and new? You are in luck! All paths end here with a list of 5 interesting classes being offered in the fall of 2016 that are sure to get your brain excited!

ENG-374-01 Advertising and Consumer Culture | Tues/Thurs 11am-12:15 p.m.| M. Esch

For those of you who wonder just how McDonald’s got that hamburger in your hand, you may want to consider this class as an option. With a focus on the history of the advertising industry, Dr. Esch will help you to analyze the theories and marketing techniques behind modern consumerism. The class will be a case study in culture and its relationship to the growing force of multimedia storytelling. According to the course description, you should prepare yourself to learn about how the industry does not only sell products but also manufactures “dreams, values and beliefs”.

WGS-100-01 Introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies | Mon/Wed 1pm-2:15pm | D. Harrington-Lueker

With Gender Studies being introduced as a minor at Salve just last year, this class presents students with one of its first opportunities to engage critically with ideas about women, gender and sexuality. With a focus on the significance of feminist theory in history as well as in the modern day, the class is full of introductory material from which you may come to explore your own personal experiences. The course description lays out plans to discuss the women’s movement and its relationship to diversity and social justice, so you are sure to leave this class feeling woke.

RTS-321-01 Superheroes, Saints and Sinners Wednesday | 6pm-8:30pm | J. Hennessy

Everyone loves a good story, and that is the message taught by Dr. Hennessy in this class that fulfills the Religious and Theological Studies core requirement. The class demonstrates how a combination of stories about good and evil have served as the foundation for wisdom in all of our lives. In a way which parallels nicely with the struggle of being a college student, the class focuses on a number of texts which exemplify the simultaneous challenges and joys of life. Whether you identify with the superhero, the saint, or the sinner, you are sure to enjoy this class.

SOA-211-01 Race and Ethnic Relations | Wednesday 2:30pm-5pm | A. Niznik

If you are someone who needs to fill the Global Awareness theme, this class may be the way to do it. Dr. Niznik seeks to offer a history of the immigrant experience in American society with his class which focuses on the conflicts and social interactions between groups of diverse cultural heritage. Immigration is a source of ongoing debate in the United States so, hopefully you will leave this class feeling that much more informed.

POL-299-01 Special Topic: Diplomacy and Statecraft | Tues/Thurs 3:45pm-5pm | C. Merrill

If power and prosperity are what you seek, you should probably be interested in this class. Within it, you will uncover the names of those behind-the-scenes decision-makers who have carved the course of our world’s history. Whether in peace or at war, diplomats are able to shape the fate of nations. And who wouldn’t want to know about the skill involved in being a great leader?
