First Night Newport
Join Newport in celebrating the end of 2003 and bringing in 2004! First Night Newport will be holding a non-alcoholic celebration on December 31, 2003 from 5pm through 9pm.
Events will include various performances by jazz musicians, classical string quartets, Celtic music and Irish folk festivities. The performances will be held in numerous buildings around Newport, such as the Redwood Library, Newport City Hall and the Colony House. Drop by any of the performances to snack on refreshments, courtesy of local Newport businesses and organizations.
Tickets will be sold in advance at the Newport Gateway Center, Newport Life Magazine, Sig’s Market and the Museum of Newport History for $6. Tickets may also be purchased on December 31 for $7.
The tickets come in the form of a button, which, if worn, will grant numerous discounts around town. Rocco’s, Salvation Cafe, Dave’s on Thames, Sardella’s, Christie’s and many other cafes and restaurants will be offering anywhere from 10-20% off dining bills. Some cafes will even be offering a “buy one meal, get one free” deal.

Fashion Show to Benefit “Looking Upward” Foundation
Cather’s and Coyne, a local shoe boutique located in Brick Market, is sponsoring a fashion show and auction to benefit the “Looking Upwards” Foundation. “Looking Upwards” is a home-based physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy organization which assists children and young adults living on the Aquidneck Island.
The auction will take place at POP on Broadway on December 4, 2003. The event will run from 7 pm through 1 am, beginning with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and quiet music from 7 pm through 9 pm. The fashion show will begin at around 9:30pm and will spotlight Karma, a boutique located on Thames Street, and Cather’s and Coyne. The latest fall and winter styles will be showcased.
Following the fashion show will be an auction, featuring a number of great items, including one pair of shoes per month for 12 months from Cather’s and Coyne. A DJ will provide music, fun, and dancing from 10:30 through 1 am.
Tickets are $20 and will be sold at the door. All proceeds will go to benefit the “Looking Upward” Foundation.
