Now that the NFL season has come to an end, baseball season is in full swing, and yes the pun was intended. The 2019-2020 offseason was a wild one for the Red Sox. Currently, the team is being investigated along with the Houston Astros in a cheating scandal involving the 2017 and 2018 World Series. Around mid-January, both the Red Sox and Alex Cora mutually agreed to part ways since Cora’s name was being thrown around as the Master Mind behind the whole scandal. This left the Red Sox with no manager a month before spring training down in Fort Myers, Florida.
This is where the question came into play, who would be hired as the manager? On Tuesday February 11, 2020, the Boston Red Sox announced that Ron Roenicke was hired as an interim manager for the team. I am not trying to be the next John Green, but here is a quick crash course of who Ron Roenicke is and what he will bring to the Red Sox and the Boston sports fans.
Back in 2017 after the season ended, Roenicke was brought onto the Red Sox as a bench manager for Alex Cora. This is beneficial to the Red Sox since Roenicke knows the team and how the operations went down. Before becoming a bench coach Roenicke spent four seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, leaving with a 342-331 record. He knows the Red Sox well since he was with them for the past two seasons, experiencing a World Series win and of course a disappointing 2019 season. Going into the 2020 season, Roenicke has a lot of positivity and momentum to push the team to work hard enough to have a much better season than last year.
To be completely honest, I-among most of Boston-was expecting Jason Veritek to become the manager. I do have hope in Roenicke and where he will lead the Red Sox as he was a fan favorite in Milwaukee. I am proud to be a Boston Red Sox junkie and unlike many others, I am excited about the season despite the news regarding Mookie Betts and David Price. Just a friendly reminder that Opening Day is 43 days away! As Jared Carrabis once said, “Stay hot, rocket”.
