Guster to Headline Salve Spring Concert

Newport, R.I. – The Boston-based trio Guster will headline Salve Regina’s annual spring concert scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday, April 25, in the Rodgers Recreation Center. Tickets for the concert go on sale Monday, March 29 and are $10 for students and $15 for guests.

Guster first came together in 1992 after the three current members met during freshman orientation at Tufts University. In short order, their dorm rooms were converted into rehearsal spaces, and the threesome began to busk by day while carving out a niche on the Boston music club scene by night. Never ones to rest on their accomplishments, the band soon climbed into a van and began spreading the word to the rest of the country. In 1994, the band released its first CD, Parachute, on its own label, to much underground acclaim.

“We feel fortunate that our songs have been embraced so strongly,” observed singer, guitarist and main lyricist Ryan Miller, who with fellow guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner and percussionist Brian Rosenworcel comprise a lineup that bypasses standard rock accouterments. Amazingly, the three musicians manage to coax an impressive array of sounds out of two voices, acoustic guitars and hand percussion that allowed the band to expand its sonic range while retaining the intimate focus of their early days.

“This whole thing started just with us as college friends playing together,” says Gardner. “Almost from the start, the momentum’s carried us. We’ve struggled at times, but there’s always been a steady pattern of growth.”

In 1998, the Hybrid/Sire label picked up the band’s second album Goldfly and re-released it. Recorded originally in 1996, it spawned the unlikely radio hit “Airport Song.” Touring extensively behind the album, Guster performed as part of the HORDE Festival alongside Semisonic and Widespread Panic, headlining many of their own dates.

The band is in the middle of a spring tour to promote their latest CD, Keep it Together, an album Rosenworcel describes as “the kind of album you can listen to over and over again with new things to discover each time.” Keep it Together is the follow-up to the hugely successful Lost and Gone Forever CD.

For the past month they have appeared with John Mayer at major universities and concert venues across the country. Over the years they have also performed with Dave Matthews, Barenaked Ladies and Bob Dylan, with appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.

Tickets for the Guster show can be purchased at the concert promotion table in Miley Hall between 11am and 1pm Monday through Thursday, March 29 through April 1. In addition, students can buy tickets at the Office of Student Activities during regular business hours when tickets are not on sale in Miley.
