Actress Cynthia Nixon announced via Twitter that she would be running for governor of New York. The 51 year old Democrat is best known for her role as Miranda in the TV series Sex and the City, which ran from the late 90’s to early 2000s. In addition, Nixon has been in films such as Amadeus, and also appeared on Broadway. The announcement of her gubernatorial bid came last month and included her first campaign video, which contains clips of Nixon and her family, Nixon walking the streets of New York, and clips of her at various rallies and political events. The video also includes a voiceover of Nixon describing changes she would like to make, as well as stating her advocacy for public schooling.
This race is not the first time Nixon has gotten involved in politics; she has also been an open advocate for women’s health, public schooling, and LGBTQ+ rights. Nixon identifies as bisexual, and met her current partner, education activist Christine Marinoni, at a gay rights rally. The two have son, who Nixon states in the video is currently enrolled in public school in Manhattan. Nixon also has two children with her ex-husband, Danny Mozes, a schoolteacher; the two seperated in 2003 after 15 years of marriage.
Nixon received the Artist for Equality award from Yale University in 2013, she also received the Visibility Award from the Human Rights Campaign in 2018. She has also been a supporter of women’s health issues after she was diagnosed with breast cancer during a routine check up in 2006. After battling the disease she has fought to raise awareness, airing a breast cancer special on NBC.
As for her gubernatorial campaign, Nixon will be challenging incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo for the democratic seat. Cuomo has been governor of New York since 2011, and has announced that he will be seeking reelection for a third term. Nixon is also running against republican candidates, John DeFrancisco, Joe Holland and Marcus Molinaro.
Nixon’s campaign has been endorsed by her former co-stars, Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker, who starred as Charlotte and Carrie alongside Nixon in Sex and the City. The two women shared their support for Nixon via instagram.
For New York natives who wish to cast their vote for any of the candidates, the election will take place on November 6, 2018.
