Grille and came home around 2 a.m. after a stop at Via Via. About an hour after the group of girls returned home, one of the girls had an unfortunate incident.
In the second floor apartment, a man entered the house and walked into the first bedroom on the left. Once in the room, the man stood over the bed where Jessica* was sleeping and proceeded to rub her leg and started to remove her covers. Jessica turned over thinking her comforter was falling off but when she felt it move again, she woke up and found a man standing over her. Jessica sat up and said, “I’m cold, wait a second, who is that?” The man, scared, ran out of the room and tripped over her trashcan. He ran down the stairs, out through the first set of doors and then out the front door.
Jessica ran to Tracy’s* room, her roommate and then to the third floor to wake everyone up. Doug*,one of the boys who lives upstairs, ran outside to try to find the man.
The police came shortly afterward and Jessica and Doug were outside talking about what happened. The police had custody of two young men one street over on Thames and they wanted Jessica to make an identification.
After some convincing, Jessica and Doug went with the police to try to identify the intruder. The two young men had the spotlight on them and the officer asked one of them to take off his hat. Then he asked them to turn to the right. In their nervous states, both young men turned in different directions. Jessica, felt bad for the young men and said that neither one of them was the man in her room.
The rest of the night was long because it was hard for Jessica to sleep. The next morning her mother came to Newport to bring her home to be with her family for the weekend. The incident happened the Thursday before President’s Day weekend.
On Monday, when everyone returned from the long weekend, the house became known as “Fort Knox.” Jessica’s father bought alarms for the doors and windows and she now has a chain lock on her door. The girls are more adamant about making sure all doors are locked at all times during the day.
Thursday night is a popular night for college students to go out for the evening and enjoy the Newport nightlife. However, it is important that when going out on these nights students remember that doors must be locked because there have been numerous houses that have had a predator get in and go into bedrooms.
This story is not meant to scare anyone but purely as a warning that although Newport is a very safe place to live, it is always important to be safe.
