Chris Peasley, a Salve Regina student and member of the basketball team, broke his nose and parts of the bones around his right eye while working out at Rodgers Recreation Center on October 2nd.
Peasley was using a resistance band wrapped around a metal bar when the bar came loose and broke multiple bones in his face.
The athlete was transported to Newport Hospital Emergency Room by ambulance, but later taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. There, they manually realigned his nose, packed it, and stitched parts of his face. He was discharged at 6:00 AM.
Peasley returned to campus after Columbus Day Weekend. He will be out of sports for three weeks. After that, he will be able to play with no contacts: practice drills only, and no games. Soon after, he will be able to play in games, so long as he wears a protective nose guard mask during them.
Despite the severity of the injury, Peasley stated that the most important part of what happened is not what happened to him, but how the people in his life reacted. He had a large turnout of support: The basketball team and his coach, as well as his girlfriend and his mother, all came to meet him at the Newport Hospital ER immediately after the incident. His mom went along with him to Providence, and then brought him home after.
Peasley commented that he is also thankful to Salve professors and staff for helping him through this incident.
The support shown to Chris is a testament to the strength of both an athletic team and the community at Salve.
