Best in Newport: Guacamole

By: Moira Tirrell | Staff Writer

If there is one thing I love it is some good guacamole. In my humble opinion, Newport is home to some of the best guacamole. This is exactly why I chose to check out some of the various guacamole dishes around town to see which was my number one.

Tijuana Burrito Grill

To start off my guacamole journey, I decided to take a step into one of my favorite places to get a burrito: Tijuana Burrito Grill in Newport. To begin, I have to give Tijuana some extra points simply because I asked for a side order of guacamole and they handed me a large tub. I am not sure exactly why, but it was greatly appreciated. When I went back to try the guacamole, it was really, really good. For its price, it was a very good size and definitely tasted fresh. The chips that came along with it were very thin which made the guacamole  taste even better. It was a little bit chunky with some chunks of avocado, but if that is your thing, I definitely recommend it. Other than that, I feel as though it had a good mix of different ingredients and I never felt as though one component was too overpowering.

Perro Salado

Next, I went to one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Newport: Perro Salado. Perro always hits the spot when it comes to their tacos and quesadillas, so I was looking forward to seeing how their guacamole compared to the others. While it is definitely a little bit more expensive, costing $15, it is definitely worth it. Not only was the plate huge, perfect for a group of people, but they gave you their seasoned chips and plantains for dipping. Different from the others, this guacamole has a lot of the topping so it was more of a “mix it yourself” situation. This is something I really liked. As a picky eater, I always have trouble when there is too much tomato or onion, so this helped to avoid that all together. This guacamole did have some type of nut on top of it, which I was not a major fan of, but I definitely could have asked to have it without them. Overall, an incredible experience, incredible atmosphere, and incredible guacamole.

Diego’s

Last but certainly not least, I went to Diegos in Newport. This guacamole was very good. As a matter of fact, it looked a lot like Tijuana’s. Once again, this guacamole was priced at about $15 for a regular size. Since I was eating it by myself, I ordered a side order. I really enjoyed how fresh the guacamole tasted. This one in particular was far smoother than the others, as it did not have a lot of chunks of avocado. I do  think that the guacamole was very good, but I do not feel as though I could see myself paying $15 for it. The chips that came with the guacamole were also far different from the others. While they were very good, these were more of a thicker type of chip. Although I still thought that they were incredible, I prefer a thinner, crispy chip. I also tried a quesadilla and it tasted incredible when adding the guacamole to it. The atmosphere in Diegos was also great!

Rating: 6.8/10

So, after taking all of this into consideration, my final ranking for the best guacamole in Newport is as follows:

  1. Perro Salado
  2. Tijuana Burrito Grill
  3. Diego’s
