As night falls on September 9th, the lawn of Wakehurst is buzzing with activity. Trucks drive back and forth and one can just make out the forms of people moving about. One truck stops and large spotlights rise from its roof. Suddenly the lawn is covered in light. Now the previously shadowy forms become clear and crisp– Student Activities Staff and Campus Activities Board volunteers putting the finishing touches on the largest Friday Night Live event to date. Students line up for Friday Night Live shirts that glow in the dark and were handed out hundreds of students. Finally, the time arrives and students push forth– shirts are handed out, and the vast array of attractions are swarmed. Countless students rush to the caricature artists, and leave with yet another symbol of an amazing memory with which to decorate their dorm room walls. The Ben and Jerry’s stand quickly forms a line for the several flavors of delectable ice cream.
Sophomore Vittoria Penna shared her experience over ice cream saying, “The Boardwalk Bash was really fun! As someone who went to many events last year this was one of my favorites and I think there was a great opportunity for freshmen to meet other freshmen as well as upperclassmen.” After enjoying, some ice cream students also enjoyed the moc-tails (non-alcoholic cocktails) doughboys, corn dogs, and even cotton candy. As Penna stated, students also had many options to meet others: over a game of mini golf or on any of the many inflatable’s—what better way to make friends than by hitting someone with a giant soft boulder? Personalized airbrush towels (pictured) were available just within Wakehurst student center past the magician.
Heather Barbour, Director of Student Activities was also thrilled with the event’s success, saying, “The Boardwalk Bash was the perfect kick off to the fall semester. We were thrilled that so many students came out on a Friday night to enjoy the event. Our Friday Night Live series has become something students look forward to each week, and this event was an awesome way to roll out the program’s fall calendar.” The next Friday Night Live event on the calendar is WSRU’s “White Out” Dance featuring WSRU DJs, alongside special guest DJ Doubletake. The Dance will be this Friday, September 23rd in Ochre Court from 9pm to 1am.
