If you missed last semester’s Man of The Year event, you have a second chance to witness the hilarity. The Student Activities Board announced that it will host a follow-up to the successful event, Woman of The Year.

The idea for Woman of the Year arose after the immense popularity and success of last semester’s Man of The Year, in which Owen Murphy took home the crown. According to Bart Carithers, director of student activities, students expressed desire for a similar event with females contestants.

Woman of the Year will feature 12 female Salve Regina students from various clubs competing to win the crown. All clubs and organizations are eligible to nominate a contestant who will represent them and try to win the title and prize on behalf of their organizations. According to Carithers each contestant will be graded on five different aspects: talent, cheer, evening wear, personal interview and a final question.

This is not a typical pageant though because Woman of the Year has a definite twist: the event’s sole purpose is to provide humor and entertainment for the audiences and contestants alike, rather than emphasizing glamour and looks. It is intended to be a lighthearted, fun event that makes its viewers and participants laugh and have a good time.

All segments of the competition are guaranteed to provide amusement for the audience, particularly cheer and evening wear. For cheer, contestants must create a school spirit cheer, a task that will require creativity, enthusiasm, and a lot of jumping. In the evening wear competition, the ladies are encouraged to wear unglamorous dresses such as ’80s prom gowns; that should provide enough reason to not miss such an exciting event.

Woman of the Year will take place in Bazarsky Hall on Apr. 16, 2010 at 8 p.m. The event is estimated to run for two and a half hours, and refreshments will be served in Jazzman’s Café afterwards. Comedian Robby Printz will M.C. the event, and Owen Murphy, the winner of Man of the Year, shall crown the lucky winner. The winner will receive $250 to benefit her sponsored organization, while runner-up will get $150 and second-runner-up will receive $100. May the best lady win!
