As I packed my bags on the Saturday before Spring Break, I dreamt of sunny beaches and an incredible tan. But as I stuffed my third pair of sweat pants in the trusty L.L. Bean duffle, I knew that dreaming was about as close as I would get to beaches and warmth on this spring break.

It’s almost time.

For the past four years it’s been all about making friends and being there for each other. The friends you know that would listen to you vent about that certain teacher’s tests you were sure were made specifically for you to fail, or that friend who somehow knew just the way to consol you when the opposite evil gender hurt you in some way.

On April 21st, men, women and children alike can be witnessed carrying sacks of coal as fast as they possibly can through the streets of Gawthorpe, Yorkshire England. Every Easter Monday, since 1963, the citizens of Gawthorpe in Yorkshire, England have hosted the World Coal Carrying Championship.

Salve began its intramural sports program four years ago, when Amanda Van Voorhis was appointed director alongside her job as women’s basketball coach, and the program has enjoyed growing success since.
