As Halloween starts to roll around the corner, many people who frequent YouTube excitedly await for seasonal makeup tutorials. These videos feature the cute, the creepy, and the downright disturbing. Most popular makeup artists on YouTube create a few Halloween related videos during the month of October, but I wanted to give a shoutout to some of the coolest special effects and body painting makeup artists that create spooky content year-round.
- Jordan Hanz
With almost half a million subscribers, Jordan Hanz takes her skills as a portrait painter onto the skin to create beautiful and creepy Halloween looks. It’s very obvious from her videos that her special effects skills are top notch, and she is quite dedicated to bringing the Halloween vibes to her channel. During the month of October, Hanz posts a new Halloween tutorial each day to give viewers lots of different ideas before going out on All Hallows Eve.

Mykie is an LA-based professional beauty and special effects makeup artist that has acquired over a million subscribers. She creates special effects makeup tutorials on her channel, as well as regular makeup tutorials. Mykie likes to play on her channel name by incorporating both “glam” and “gore” into many of her tutorials. She said on her channel that a personal goal she has for the year is to create creepy versions of typical Halloween looks. “That’s enough glam, onto the gore.”

This channel is a tag team duo of 21-year-old self-taught makeup artist, Ellinor Rosander, and her producer, Macs Moser. The two have racked up almost 700,000 subscribers. Rosander provides top-notch special effects makeup skills, and Moser edits and explains in a voiceover what she is doing. The quality of their videos is quite high, not only in video and editing skills, but in talent when it comes to Rosander’s makeup ability. Their videos are the best to watch when looking for the most outrageous special effects makeup. Most of their content is extremely creepy and twisted, and they often feature character transformations from Stranger Things and American Horror Story. Over the past month, Rosander did a clown series, making the most of the current clown scare.

This channel is the place to go to learn about wound makeup. Kiana Jones, an Australian artist that does special effects makeup as a hobby, has a passion for creating very accurate wounds with makeup. When I say accurate, I mean ACCURATE. So if you don’t have a queasy stomach, take a look at some of her videos!
