Don’t Fret Freshmen!

From the intimidating upperclassmen, to the new teacher and schedules to the new person living in your room- it can be hard to adjust to a new environment while navigating through new classes, picking your major and finding a new group of friends. At Salve Regina there are many ways to get involved and meet new people.

It’s hard if you and your roommate don’t have a lot in common. “My roommate was really quiet at first and I was nervous. We would clash because I was a little more outgoing than her,” said junior Courtney McManus, a marketing and global business major.

“In the end my roommate ended up becoming one of my best friends,” McManus said.

Not every freshman can be so lucky, and getting involved in different groups can help you make new friends and find new interests. The Campus Activities Board works hard to create opportunities for students to do just that.

For entertainment, Tom Deluca, a hypnotist, is coming on September 21 as well as a comedian, Geoff Tate, on October 5. A huge hit on campus is Monster Bingo on October 1, in Bazarsky Lecture Hall. Students will gather for a giant game of bingo that includes prizes such as TVs and gift certificates.

If you are interested in joining a club on campus stop by “club rush” on September 22, where all the student organizations on campus will be inviting you in and advertising their specialties.

If clubs aren’t your thing, that’s okay too! Sports are a huge part of Salve’s student life. If trying out for a division three sport is too much of a time commitment, intramurals are a competitive way to have fun.

“Going back to freshmen year I wish I had joined at least one club or sport. I played soccer in high school and I wish I had some sort of extracurricular activity,” McManus said.

Intramurals start on September 27. Fall sports include frisbee, flag football, 3v3 basketball and one-day golf and tennis tournaments. The winter is limited to indoor basketball, dodge ball and soccer, but the spring adds softball, kickball, and volleyball to the mix.

There are many things to do on Salve Regina University’s campus. Its up to you to explore, make new friends, find your new interests and have the time of your life.
