The cast of “The Buried Life”

Although MTV really should be putting out more music based shows, the network has struck the right chord with its addition of the show, “The Buried Life.” “The Buried Life” follows four friends, Ben Nemtin, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn and Jonnie Penn, who travel across the United States living out their “100 Things to Do Before I Die” list. Every week, as they try to accomplish one of their goals, they help a random person off the street do something from his or her own list.

This past week, “The Buried Life” crew set out to tell a joke on late night TV. The show followed their attempts at Letterman, Leno, Kimmel, and O’Brien’s late night shows. The guys tried everything from waiting in line at the show, talking to producers and even trying to get Conan O’Brien’s attention with a huge banner in the sky. As they tried to make this goal happen, the guys found someone who they would help live out a dream. This man who they chose has been blind for 21 years and wanted nothing more than to ride a horse again. By the end of the episode, both sets of dreams were fulfilled. The man took an emotional ride on a horse. Although the guys did not get to tell a joke on an English speaking late night show, Duncan Penn was able to appear on a Spanish late night show and live out his 15 minutes of fame dream of late night stardom.

If you haven’t seen an episode, tune into next week’s season finale. This show is not like all the other reality shows on MTV. It’s a great concept with a likeable cast. The cast is young and good hearted. The best moments of the show are when they help someone accomplish a goal. You will feel good after watching the guys help someone else live out one of their dreams, as small or big as they are.

At times the show is silly, but everything is in good taste. Other episodes have focused on goals such as trying to play basketball with President Obama and making a toast at a stranger’s wedding. It’s a feel good show and nothing like the other nonsense that appears on other popular MTV reality shows such as “The Jersey Shore” and “The Real World.” By the end of the half hour show, you’ll find yourself asking, ‘what do I want to do before I die?’ Hopefully MTV picks this show up for a second season. I mean, the guys aren’t even close to accomplishing all the goals on their list.
