Five of the Funniest Stand-up Specials on Netflix

By Bryce Sholtes | Staff Writer

If you’re looking for a break from all of the horror films you’ve been watching this past Halloweekend, then maybe it’s time for some comedy in your next Netflix binge. Here are some of the absolute best stand-up shows featured on Netflix that you might have missed when browsing the “Talk Shows & Stand-Up Comedy Section.”

Tom Segura – Mostly Stories

Segura is, simply put, bold, brash, and crude. He tells tales, both long and short, in his 2016 special, and there are no holds barred.  His stories are vulgar but immensely hilarious.  Segura oscillates between long stories and shorter jokes, both of which are an amazing critique on society and life.  The final story with Mike Tyson is one that will leave you rolling on the floor laughing.

Demetri Martin – Live (At the Time)

Martin returns in this 2015 special with his very personal brand of monotone and surreal observations about life. He sees things in a way that most other people may never have considered. Martin discusses topics such as signs, cheese, football, and more.  His jokes are quick, simple, and guaranteed to make you laugh.8487626700_591401650a_b-1

Mike Bribiglia – My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend

Bribiglia follows the same style of storytelling as his last special, Sleepwalk with Me, starting off the show telling a personal life story, and following up with witty anecdotes and clever jokes. This time, though, Bribiglia focuses the show on his love life after a terrible car accident.

John Mulaney – New in Town

Mulaney is easily one of the greatest story tellers of modern stand-up comedians. He presents himself very lightly, and almost in a childlike way, which lends to his delivery being that much better. Mulaney seems to find humor in the most mundane of situations, and presents them in the funniest fashion.

Bo Burnham – what.

Burnham’s fast paced, calculated show style is unprecedented amongst stand-up comedians. Every second of Burnham’s show is carefully scripted and rehearsed for perfect comedic timing with every joke.  In this 2013 special, he creates an impressive story line through jokes, songs, and interaction with prerecorded characters.
