John Demling worked with restarting the campus radio station (WSRU) this year.
With Connections Day having just passed, talk around campus is “what is it like your first year at Salve?” To ease the worries of prospective Salve students (and their parents), Mosaic conducted an informal Q&A with current freshmen finishing up their first year at the university.
Helen Johnson Cultural and Historic Preservation major Q. What is one thing you expected Salve to be?A. I was actually afraid I wouldn’t be able to make friends as easily as I have been able to. Q. Were your first year expectations met or let down?
A. My first year expectations were definitely met. I was excited to leave my home and go to this new environment where anything could happen. Q. When you didn’t know something where did you go to find out?
A. My roommates, and if we are unsure we can always ask a professor or look at the handbook. Brooke Barttelbort Communications Media major Q. Were your first year expectations met or let down?
A. Coming from California, I did not know quite what to expect. The people at Salve made me feel welcome. Salve gave me the great opportunity to move away from my family and grow, without being too overwhelmed. Q. What is one thing you were surprised about during your first year?
A. Salve surprised me with the amount of fire drills they have in Miley. I have been in more fire drills than most people have in their entire life. Q. What is one thing every new freshman should pack but might not think to?
A. Every freshman should pack lots of socks, towels, and anything with caffeine. John Demling Politics major Q. What is one thing you were surprised about during your first year?
A. How much free time we had. Q. What is something you wish you knew before you came to Salve?
A. I wish I knew how hard it could be to find parties and things to do when you are a guy who is not involved in sports. It is a struggle to find stuff to do on some nights. Q. What is one thing every new freshman should pack but might not think to?
A. Lysol and paper towels things get dirty and you need to be able to clean them. Furthermore a lot of snacks because you eat so much food in college. Headphones for your laptop so as not to anger your roommate and double-sided poster tape that’s the only stuff that works. Matt Higgins Administration of Justice major Q. What is one thing you expected Salve to be?
A. The one thing I would say I expected was the work load to be rather tough. Other than that I was planning on learning as I go along. Q. Were your first year expectations met or let down?
A. My one expectation was met! The transition from high school work to college work was a big jump. Q. When you didn’t know something where did you go to find out?
A. If there was something I didn’t know I usually went to our RA or another upperclassmen that I knew.
