Every year, the Groovy Girls Prom Dress Drive provides countless girls the opportunity to snag a prom dress of their own. This year’s drive, presented by Child & Family of Rhode Island in partnership with Salve Regina University, will take place on Saturday April 11th. The drive will run from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. in Salve Regina’s Young Building, located on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Members of the community are welcome to attend the daylong event.
Child & Family, a private, non-profit social service agency, established the comprehensive Groovy Girls Program as a means of enriching the lives of young girls who are in foster care. According to the provider’s website, “Groovy Girls works to empower these girls by helping them to believe in themselves and learn how to build positive relationships while awaiting adoption.”
Since the program’s inception in 2012, the Groovy Girls have participated in a wide rang of events, including art shows, auctions, poetry workshops and yearly prom dress drives. Events such as these serve to facilitate experiences that will bolster the girls’ confidence while connecting them with members of the community. As Child & Family’s website states, “Through community engagement we provide opportunities for fun, success and personal growth.”
As this weekend’s drive approaches, the Groovy Girls program will continue to accept donations of dresses, shoes and accessories until Wednesday, April 8th. According to Child & Family’s website, “With your help, we’d like to make sure no girl is left out this prom season.”
