Newport, like much of New England, was pushed headfirst into winter with the first snowstorm of the season. Starting late Friday afternoon, the nor’easter brought in snow, sleet, and rain, hitting the island with 10-12 inches over the weekend. Road conditions were slippery and many chose to stay indoors then brave the dangerous conditions. The Newport Daily News reported more than 25 accidents were filed with the Middletown police throughout the weekend. With injuries suffered in four of those accidents.

The storm slowed traffic, delayed flights, and caused numerous cancellations. At Governor Carcieri’s request, the annual Governor’s Ball fundraiser was moved from Saturday (the heaviest day of snow and wind) to Sunday night. Much to the delight and frustration of some History seniors, their thesis presentations were rescheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. in the conference room of Rodgers Recreation, and on Friday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. in O’Hare 228. The Holiday Band Concert featuring the Salve Jazz Ensemble and Newport Community Band was postponed until Sunday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. in Ochre Court. Tickets are available at the door at $5 for general public and $3 for students.

Here’s what Salve students had to say about their snowy weekend…..

Mattias Sullivan

Sophomore – Vermont

“I had a snowball fight with some dorm friends (Moore Hall). Then watched movies and studied, it was nothing too exciting.”

Vicky Mello

Freshman – New Hampshire

“On Friday night I got stranded. The buses from Providence were running late and when we got to Gateway, Salve had cancelled their shuttle service. After a lot of phone calls, Moe, the shuttle driver, came to our rescue.”

Annie Wallace

Senior – Minnesota

“I cleared off my car about 35 times and then filmed stuff for my Photo 3 class.”

Kristen Kowalski

Sophomore – Massachusetts

“I was stranded at home all weekend. Then I drove back Monday morning for my 8 o’clock class.”

Paul Rogers

Senior – Massachusetts

“I had some friends over and socialized but it was quiet, no one really wanted to venture outside and come over.”
