Crafty Chaos: Week Two
By: Jessica Albright | Staff Writer
It’s been a while since my initial week one update, so a lot has happened in my crochet journey. First of all, here is a visual of my progress.
These are all the granny squares I have made in order. They still aren’t my strongest skill, but I would say seeing the improvement is exciting.
I have also had some practice making hearts and flowers, which has been fun, and I might turn them into a hanging decoration for the dorm room.
A major project I have finished working on is a beanie. Now this is a bittersweet project. It took me over 11 hours to complete and over 4,000 stitches. It was a combination of fun, exhausting and repetitive. I did end up enjoying the process though. I also learned a lot of patience and gained some good practice for certain crochet stitches. However, the beanie ended up being way too small for my head, even though I followed the exact measurements from the video. Thankfully my six-year-old brother has a smaller head so hopefully my time won’t be totally wasted.
Over the past two weeks, I have really enjoyed doing crochet. It can sometimes be time consuming, but I have found it to be relaxing to do after my homework is completed for the day. If you are planning to start crocheting, do not be discouraged if it doesn’t start in your favor. It can be difficult to pick up and failure is inevitable. However, it is so satisfying when you finish a project that actually looks decent, so push through the frustration. Also, I learned that when doing long projects, the beanie in my case, your finger can go sort of numb from being rubbed raw by the crochet hook. It took about a day to fully be able to feel the inside of my finger and it was a strange phenomenon.
Overall, week two of learning to crochet was a success, even though most of it was spent on making a beanie that didn’t fit my head. My goal for the next couple of weeks will be to possibly start on a bigger project, whether that means a beanie that actually fits me or a cardigan. Regardless of my project, I am excited to get back into the swing of things and start on a fun new thing. Best of luck to my fellow crafty people!
