Learning Unlimited

Going to school is a fundamental part of our American society. Our parents focus our childhood around our academic experience. Going to school teaches not only scholarly knowledge, but also develops our interaction in social situations, increases our independence, and allows us to create goals to work towards. Education is a tool for motivation and success, and Salve students enrolled in the Learning Unlimited course are learning these important life lessons firsthand.

Each Thursday evening, a group of adults with developmental disabilities are welcomed to Salve, which serves as their education location. Their interaction their Salve learning partner (an undergraduate student) of the students is their learning experience for the week. The class is taught by Mrs. Kathryn Rok, and focuses on disability issues in our society. It promotes equality, inclusiveness, and respect for individual differences. The course’s goals are evident as soon as the adult students arrive.

One of the misconceptions of education is that in an educational setting there is a teacher, and there is a student. In reality, the teacher-student relationship is symbiotic, creating a learning aspect to all who are involved. Learning Unlimited and both sets of students have acknowledged this truth and together, take on both roles in the relationship. Skills such as reading, writing, money transactions, using public transportation, preparing food, computer skills, etc…

Instructor, Kathryn Rok, adds, “Salve students involved in Learning Unlimited come to recognize the devaluing assumptions made about people with disabilities. The Learning Unlimited learning teams break down barriers people with disabilities often face in our communities.” And concurrently, their excitement is clearly evident upon their arrival. It is difficult for us to comprehend how much the two hours means to them and it is a commitment that requires committed participants.

It is highly recommended that students participate in Learning Unlimited; being enrolled for the credit or as a volunteer program. Regardless of your motivation, the rewards far outweigh the effortless two hour commitment. It is a great feeling to know you are helping to break down barriers such as illiteracy and are opening up the world, exposing a broad new spectrum of life. Facilitating the ability to experience new aspects of living is perhaps their most significant development of their life.

Our institution should pride itself for conducting such an unique course. Here at Salve Regina, the success of the students & the rewards for the mentally challenged prove its validity. The experience is an eye-opening one, and both students come away with a new perspective on education.
