The 5K Mansion Run and Walk brought about 450 people together to support the Friends of Seahawks Athletics on Saturday, September 22, 2012.
This is the thirteenth annual Mansion 5K race also included a Kid’s Fun Run. With cool running weather and WSRU radio getting the crowd ready, the participants began at Rodger’s Recreation Center and looped past the mansions on Bellevue Avenue, then back to Rodger’s to complete the 5K. The runners included students, alumni, parents and friends of Salve Regina University.
Proceeds go to the Friends of Seahawks Athletics fund. This fund supports athletics on campus as well as the division III teams. Matt Boxler, University Relations and Race Director, expects to raise somewhere around $8,000-$9,000 from the race. Although some of this money is used to put on the race, that is still a great contribution to Seahawks Althletics. Boxler says that regardless of the money, the main goal is to bring people together producing “good will within the Salve community.”
Student body President, Tram-Anh Nguyen ’12, ran for the first time this year, saying, “I’m a senior- I had to do it once in my four years!” Nguyen can participate again next year as an alumnus. Many come back to participate in this event and others during Fall Festival Weekend. Events include sports games, awards ceremonies, concerts, and gatherings around campus and in Newport. The Mansion 5K kicked off the events for Saturday.
Winners were Jason Reilly of Cumberland, RI with a time of 16:15, and Tracy Simso of Melbourne, FL with a time of 19:42. First place male and female won $150, second place male and female won $100, and third place male and female won $50. The top finishers in each age bracket received trophies.
