I went on a mission to find a good burger place in Newport, and I think Mission is that spot.
Hidden off of Broadway, Mission is a small, hole in the wall burger joint in Newport that is a great spot to grab lunch or dinner with friends on the weekend.
The wooden interior of the restaurant is bright and welcoming, with pops of lime and strings of lights that add a fun vibe. All of the tables are communal, which is a great way to meet new people!
A list of burger options on a giant roll of brown kitchen paper hanging behind the counter serves as the menu, which is fully customizable. The menu also includes a variety of different hot dogs, falafel, fries, as well as house-made popsicles.
I decided to stick to a simple bacon cheeseburger with lettuce and “Mission Sauce,” which is similar to the sauce on a Big Mac. The prices were moderate, and seemed reasonable for fresh, handmade food.
Instead of an electronic buzzer or an order number, Mission provides you with a plastic animal toy that bears a celebrity name. Mine was a stegosaurus named Pamela Anderson; the people next to my friend and I had a lion named Snoop Dogg.
While waiting for my food, I discovered that Mission’s music is on point! I heard some of my favorite songs from bands I love, including Two Door Cinema Club, The Temper Trap, The Lumineers, Walk The Moon, and Foster the People. I was pleased that the musical atmosphere was fun and familiar.
However, I made the mistake of going to Mission on a Saturday during prime lunch time and had to wait about 30 minutes for my food to come out of the kitchen. Let me tell you though…the wait was WELL worth it! My burger wasn’t too big or small, was juicy, delicious, and put a smile on my face. The french fries had the perfect balance of crispy and potato-y. I ate everything that was in front of me with no shame.
Afterwards, I happily realized that I wasn’t sickly full like I usually am after eating a burger and fries. My stomach was satisfied by just the right amount of food.
The only regret I had was not telling the girl at the counter how I wanted my burger cooked; it ended up being a little more pink than I would usually like. My friend and I both realized that the staff didn’t ask either of us about how we wanted our burgers cooked. She agreed with me that they should have asked.
My Saturday trip to Mission proved to be a success, and I plan on going back very soon!
