After losing his father and hero, Officer Clinton Davis, in the line of duty to the September 11 attacks in New York City, Julian Miles Davis releases his debut EP entitled, “Sicko” this Thanksgiving season in good taste – the same day of his father’s birth. Officer Davis would have been 49 years old. Although misfortune and sorrow has struck Davis, his family, friends and loved ones, “Sicko” brings beautiful atonement to the music industry’s ears.
The up-and-coming Singer/Songwriter not only pens every one of his enthralling songs, but also handles vocals, a 6-string guitar and keys. Davis is accompanied by Jake Sommers on drums and Sajeeb Saha on violin and bass. The trio is quite the musical alliance. Check out the sweet serenade, ‘Closest To Home’ to get a feeling for their harmonized and reverberating orchestration.
With vocals that are perfectly positioned above the instrumentals, the 19-year-old has accredited artists such as, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson and Justin Nozuka as major musical influences. However, Davis has been noted for his reminiscent sounds to John Legend. Check out the sweet and honest ballad ‘Nothing Happened’ for a sample of Davis’ strong and wholesome vocals.
Nonetheless, the ruminating and ever-truthful tracks, ‘Let You Down’ and ‘Parenthesis (These Four Walls) are not to be overlooked, as they are my top two picks for the 5-track record. No tracks to skip this time around.
Luckily, the very busy Julian Miles Davis took five minutes to chat with me. Here’s what he had to say:
Whose records are you currently jamming? “Right now I’m really into Mumford and Sons’ album, ‘Sigh No More,’ but my new favorite song is ‘DC or Nothing’ by Wale; I think his new album ‘Ambition’ may be up for a Grammy.”
What was the biggest struggle you faced while working on “Sicko” and how did you over come it? “I think my biggest struggle was trying to make all the songs relatable to everyone without sacrificing meaning. Then eventually I realized that I just had to let go. If the emotions were true then they would relate.”
Your musical style has been described as everything from acoustic and alternative to rock and soul; what sounds can listeners expect to hear from you next? “Well I think it’s too early to say, my writing comes in phases. It usually depends on my mood. Winter usually makes me a little more relaxed and cheerful actually. Everything is quieter. I love the holidays with family and friends so that will definitely influence my writing. “
What is next for you? “Next I’m just going to focus on trying to promote the EP and organizing a summer tour for this year. I’ll be playing a few shows coming up and trying to have good time while doing it.”
