Outer Banks (OBX) has been an instant hit since the first season aired in 2020. During quarantine, it seemed as if every video on the TikTok “for you” page was about the show. Ever since its immense popularity a few years ago, it continues to garner hype when new seasons are announced. Just last week, the third season was released. Before we jump into season three, here’s what you may be forgetting from previous seasons…
At the end of the first season, main characters John B and Sarah made it out of the OBX after being chased by police. Their boat went right into a treacherous storm which became important in the second season. During the first season, Rafe, Sarah’s brother, ends up in some trouble, owing drug dealers some money. He strives to satisfy his father but he continues to fail. It comes out that their father, Ward, was also after the gold that John B’s father was after. As for the other Pogues, Pope confesses his love for Kie, which we quickly discover is not mutual. JJ continues to struggle with the relationship with his father and the lack of comfort in his life.
The second season opens with John B and Sarah being stuck in the middle of the ocean after their boat sank in the storm. They are saved by a passing boat but they quickly realize they’re in danger. During this season, we meet Cleo, whom we will get to know a little bit better in the third season. Cleo saves them and quickly befriends them. The other Pogues go after Sarah and John B in an attempt to run away with them. They end up going back to the OBX together to clear John B’s name after being accused of a murder he did not commit. They discover there is more than just the gold and are now after multiple different treasures. It comes out that John B’s father is indeed alive and is also on this treasure hunt.
So, that brings us to season 3. This season was more action packed than previous seasons. It is a complete shift from what the first season was like. In the first season we see the characters living out their everyday lives as teenagers. Now, they’re running from the police and chasing after more than one prize. The characters’ relationships with each other change. The biggest part of the plot is that John B and his father are reunited in Barbados. We see John B’s and his fathers relationship grow as they search for more gold. His dad has spent almost his entire life searching for gold, now he is joined with his son and they’ve never been closer to finding it. Ward continues to get in the way, as he always seems to do. Him and Rafe disband as a team when Rafe continues to make attempts to please his father, which backfires.
The Pogues make their way back to the OBX for a short while before John B’s father is kidnapped to confess what he knows about finding the gold. Characters, such as Topper and the parents of the Pogues, come back into the picture. We also see romance blossom between some of the characters. Cleo stays with Pope while in the OBX. Cleo and Pope grow very close, and eventually start to develop feelings for each other. As for JJ, he starts to develop feelings for Kie. In my humble opinion, this was one of the best things to happen this season. John B and Sarah’s relationship however, starts to become a little rocky. After seeing Topper again, Sarah begins to lose sight of her loyalty to John B. Once they regain focus on the gold, they succeed in finding it, at the cost of Ward and Big John’s lives.
The third season gave the viewers everything they wanted, and maybe some plot lines they didn’t want. The ending of the third season has viewers in shambles. Most of the time I was watching this season, I felt as though there were so many things happening and it was hard to keep up. It seems so different from the first season we saw. Escaping the police and being kidnapped is the opposite of the cliche, stupid teenagers we saw in the first season. I kind of wish they were still your typical, normal teenagers. Obviously, they continue to make mistakes, like teenagers do, but there are many aspects of the show that may seem unrealistic. The relationships they have with their families are the most realistic part of the show. Every teen finds it hard to get along with their parents, so this provides some normalcy and makes the viewers feel connected to the characters. This season ends with the Pogues being approached by someone who would like them to hunt for another treasure. They seem intrigued and after the success of their last mission, they seem down for the challenge.
The show continues to amass millions of viewers worldwide every season. The third season ends in a cliff-hanger, and the show has already been picked up for another season. Looks like we’ll be seeing the Pogues again very soon. What will season four bring?
