With the new semester comes a new art exhibit at the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery in the Antone Center. The new works on display are the winners of the Rhode Island Scholastic Art Awards. These awards are presented to middle and high school students who submit their work to be judged. The awards program also offers workshops, and presents the awards during a ceremony. The ceremony for the 75 gold and silver key award-winners, and their parents and teachers, will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. in O’Hare Academic Center. An opening reception will follow from 3-5 p.m. in the gallery. Both Salve Regina University and The Rhode Island Art Education Association sponsor these awards. This Association works, among other things, to improve art education and create more opportunities for students pursuing art.
The collection is extensive, nearly 200 works, covering a majority of the walls. Extra display walls are also set up inside and outside the gallery to house more work. This will be the third year that Salve Regina hosts the exhibition for the Scholastic Art Awards. Mediums range from paint to video/animation to fashion design. The gallery will be open until Sunday, Feb. 5. The Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday 11-4 p.m., Friday 11-1 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 p.m. For further information about the Rhode Island Scholastic Awards, visit www.ri.net/riaea.
