NEWPORT-RI- Mad Hatter Bakery owner and chef, Audra Lalli, once was requested to make a white, two- tier wedding cake in the shape of the Newport Pell Bridge. In order to complete this peculiar task, the bridge had to stand on top of two cakes, side-by side.
If you thought a wedding cake in the shape of a bridge wasn’t strange enough, think again. The bride and groom were also “dead heads,” and requested to have Grateful Dead Bears hidden on the back of their wedding cake, so their parents wouldn’t see it. In order to do this, Lalli created two Grateful Dead bears in white on the white cake. Today, wedding cakes are may still include the classic white on white, but more extreme wedding cakes seem to be gaining popularity, with the exception of a few odd balls. Trying to find the perfect style and look for a wedding cake may be difficult. But there are tons of wedding cakes to choose from with all the different styles, designs, techniques, and flavors. No matter what, a bride and groom will definitely be able to find a trendy wedding cake to fit their personalities and styles. Even though butter cream cakes are the easiest, Lemon Raspberry, Lemon Strawberry, Strawberry Grand Marnier, Strawberries and Cream, Chocolate Raspberry, Chocolate Strawberry, Raspberry Cappuccino, Mocha cake, and the classic Vanilla on Vanilla and Double Chocolate, are still offered. When it comes to flavors, Fatulli’s has so many to pick from. Janet Fatulli, owner and baker at Fatulli’s Gourmet Bakery and Deli in Middletown for about seven years, has a variety of flavors for the perfect wedding cake. With so many choices, Fatulli offers “many flavors for wedding cakes so that the bride and groom are satisfied.” According to an article from The Hartford Courant Company in Connecticut, colors are in! West Hartford pastry chef, Carol Murdock, says, “We’re seeing more color.” The article notes that by flipping through different bridal magazines and surfing the Web, people will notice that color makes a statement. Different colors usually depend on different seasons. They seem to inspire different shades and tints. In the fall and winter seasons, burgundy, silver, and gold colors are popular. And in the spring, the most colors used are pastels and are vibrant and clean. The color that decorators are wishing to disappear is the black and white color scheme. “If I show you a picture of a white and black cake, your eye goes right to the black,” said Murdock.
