For the eighth consecutive year, Salve Regina University’s Student Government Association (SGA) will be sponsoring the OXFAM Hunger Feast, to raise awareness about world hunger. This year’s feast will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the Ochre Court Great Hall.
“It’s a good way to associate people with hunger problems,” said Jennifer Jensen, assistant to the dean of students and adviser to SGA.
Upon entering the Great Hall, each student will receive a piece of paper with one of three things written on it. Ten percent of the papers will say first class, 20 percent will say second class, and 70 percent will say third class. These percentages represent the worldwide statistics on what people eat each day.
People who receive a first-class ticket will be waited on by Salve students and eat an elegant five-course meal on fine china and table linens. Second-class ticket holders will eat a smaller meal of spaghetti with tomato sauce and garlic bread. While the third class will have a small meal of rice and beans served out of a large communal bowl and will have no utensils.
People in the third class will be representative of the approximately 4.2 billion people worldwide who eat a diet that is insufficient to sustain a healthy and active lifestyle.
According to the group’s web site, OXFAM is an organization that works with communities in over 100 countries worldwide to “create lasting solutions for poverty, suffering and injustice” and “build a world that is safer, and more harmonious.” In addition to dealing with hunger, it works to alleviate many issues including HIV/AIDS, lack of education, and the problems that are related to natural disaster and wars.
Resident students on the meal plan may attend free. For others, the cost is $5. For further information, contact Jennifer Jensen at 341-2209 or jensenj@salve.edu.
