Alyx Kellington, a well known photographer and public speaker will be giving a lecture at Salve on March 16 at 7 p.m. in the Rogers rec center. The lecture, sponsored by the Mosaic, is titled: “The Role of the Media: Exploitation or Education?”
The lecture deals with Kellington’s exploration of the role of the media and its responsibilities. A big part of Kellington’s presentation will deal with the contextualization of photos, and the fact that cropping and inaccurate captions can completely change the context of what people are seeing. She uses her own photography to illustrate these points through out her lecture. Kellington, an Austin, Texas native has traveled to more than 25 countries world wide since 1981, and has extensive experience as a photojournalist. Kellington has lived in Haiti, Mexico, and El Salvador for several years at a time. In sharing her experiences, and the photos she has taken in these countries, she hopes to promote global awareness. Kellington has worked for such publications as, Newsweek, L.A. Times, New York Times Washington Post, and the Boston Globe. She earned her degree in photojournalism from the New England school of Photography in Boston, and started her career as a freelance photographer in El Salvador. Her first project dealt with the civil war there and it’s effect on children.
