Joseph R. DiStefano, chairman of the board of trustees of Salve Regina University, has announced that M. Therese Antone, RSM will complete her tenure as president of Salve Regina on June 30, 2009. She has served as president of Salve Regina since 1994.
In July, 2009, she will transition into a new role as Chancellor of the University. Sister Therese will be the first to assume this role. The Chancellor of the University holds an indefinite term, serves at the pleasure of the Board of Trustees and cannot alter the corporate structure of the University.
In a written statement to the university community, DiStefano sent a statement to the Salve Regina community saying the position of Chancellor was created by the Board of Trustees in 2005, in association with planning and development for the future of Salve Regina.
Sister Therese will remain an active presence on campus providing a unique perspective and necessary experience to help with decisions while free of the day-to day executive responsibilities for operations and programs at Salve Regina, according to DiStefano. Additionally, DiStefano stated that Sister Therese’s knowledge “will be of inestimable value.”
DiStefano went on to say that Sister Therese “has led the dynamic and substantial development of Salve Regina’s academic community and has worked diligently to increase the profile and recognition of the University as a quality, liberal arts institution. Her continued service to Salve Regina ensures the further development of strong relationships with all constituents and a vibrant and influential presence of the Sisters of Mercy.”
