Football player Henry Blaha once said that “Rugby is a beastly game played by gentlemen; soccer is a gentleman’s game played by beasts; football is a beastly game played by beasts.” If Mr. Blaha is right, then the gentlemen of the Salve Regina University Rugby Football Club will put their beastly skills to the test when they attend Nationals this spring. On the field the gentlemen of the Rugby Football Club have proven that their players can take a punch, yet off the field the gentlemen have been hit hard by their lack of funding. In order to be able to attend nationals, the Rugby Football Club will need to raise $4,000.

The Rugby Football Club started as an intramural sport, but because of the size of their team (38 members) and their dedication, the intramural sport became a club. The club has proven their talent and will travel to Cherry Hill, N.J. for Nationals. Currently, the club receives limited funding that is barely enough to cover their expenses. The $4,000 that the club hopes to raise will go towards travel, field fees, equipment and new uniforms since the club has worn second hand uniforms for their season.

In an effort to raise money for the club, Salve Regina University’s collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association has offered to host the club’s fundraiser. On Mar. 18, 2009, the Rugby Football Club will host a movie night fundraiser at the Jane Pickens’s Theater in downtown Newport. The fundraiser will feature the 1978 hit Animal House starting at 7 p.m.

After the film is when the real fun begins- the silent auction. During the auction, guest will enjoy food provided by local vendors. The silent auction includes lavish items donated by the YMCA and Newport Storm, among many more. The evening is sure to promise amusements and an all around good time for all.

The event is only open to the SRU community; however, it is not a public event. The tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any rugby player or from the club’s student event planner Jessica Moschella by e-mail at Jessica.Moschella@salve.edu. For additional information please contact Ms. Moschella at the same e-mail.
