Men selling themselves may sound like a taboo business venture, but to raise money for the team the Salve Regina rugby team hosted a “Rent A Rugger” event in Bazarsky Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
During the event each team member walked up to the stage, sang a song of his choice, and was auctioned off to members of the audience for bids starting at $15. Overall, the team raised almost $2000 for the cause.
First to be “auctioned off” was senior rugby player Zach Moreau, who marched down the runway wearing a red Russian sweat suit and waiving a Russian flag. He was sold to the highest bidder for $40. The team member that received the highest bid though, was not even a team member, but the Rugby coach, who made $150.
The players did many things to raise money for their cause: dancing, removing their shirts, performing jujitsu, and one team member attempted to stuff one marshmallow in his mouth per bid he received.
When asked what he did to prepare for this prestigious event, sophomore Andrew Baikes said he bought flowers, which he later threw all over the hall, and dressed his best.
Other members of the team hardly dressed up at all, wearing short-shorts and ripped t-shirts all around Bazarsky. Once a teammate was purchased, he was at the disposal of whoever bought him four hours. Those who were wealthy enough to afford a player could make him do anything they desired for that time frame.
