Veronica Rynn is not only a nutrition teacher in the nursing department at Salve Regina University, but she also knows how to move her feet on the dance floor. Rynn teaches a Tango class every Tuesday night from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the Edward King House, which is an old red brick building right behind the CVS on Bellevue Avenue.
A year ago, Rynn started learning Argentine Tango in Connecticut and found a passion for the dance. She realized that she would like to teach it to others. When she moved to Newport, she thought that the perfect idea would be able to share such delicate dance to the Newport community.
“When I hear the word Tango, dancing comes to mind, and the beautiful moves that I can create once I hear the music,” said Rynn.
Very dedicated to the improvement of her students, Rynn also offers practices on Thursday nights to make sure that each of her students are learning something new every night. A couple taking the beginner’s class said that they, “like the class very much and anticipate to come every week because Veronica is a good teacher and an excellent dance leader.”
Around 20 people take the Tango class with Rynn and all seem to enjoy it. Austin Schwarz, a sophomore, moves to the beat of the Tango. “The Tango is fun and a life skill tool to learn,” said Schwarz.
Another dance student agreed that the class is fantastic, but would like to see more males join in on the dance. The student also said both parties need to have the correct shoe attire, which are closed toe shoes with leather bottoms, in order to move smoothly on the dance floor.
“Tango is a fabulous thing to learn,” said Rynn. “It teaches you about yourself and others. It opens your eyes to a new world and helps you connect in a physical level. It’s a beautiful thing.”
The next series of Tango classes start on Nov. 16, 2010. Salve Regina student can take the class for half the usual price, so for students the cost will be $10 for one person and $15 for a couple.
