Salve students are hosting a Suitcase Dance in honor of the Tsunami Relief Fund
Sick of this cold weather? Then pack your bags, the Suitcase Dance is around the corner.
Thursday, February 24, 2005, Salve Regina University will host the first Suitcase Dance. The dance is in honor of raising money for the Tsunami Relief Fund. The dance will be held from 8 p.m. -11 p.m. in Ochre Court. Music, snacks and refreshments are available. Tickets are $5 and with the purchase of a ticket, a student is entered into a raffle for one of three prizes. The first prize winner will receive a round trip ticket on American Airlines, a value worth $400. The second place winner will receive a day trip for four to Foxwoods. The third place winner will receive a commuter/resident parking sticker for the next academic school year. World Wise Travel, “The Spring Break Specialists” is the sponsor for the event Additional raffle tickets are available with prizes of stress baskets, gift certificates for Body Masters spa and facial, Thai Cuisine, local restaurants, the Salve Regina University Campus bookstore, and much more. This benefit dance, according to Ashley Marchand, First Year Experience Coordinator, is going to help raise money for the $5,000 ark that will be donated to Heifer International. Heifer will donate animals to the countries and victims of the Tsunami to help with their restoration efforts. The First Year Experience with the freshman class has been working hard trying to organize for the past six weeks and through this dance, hopes to get the campus community support. Students, faculty, and staff are eligible for a ticket. The tickets are available in McAuley 309 and 321, Sr. Marianna in the Office of Campus Ministry, Community and Government Office in Ochre Court, and the basement of Wakehurst. The tickets are also on sale during lunch hours in Miley, Resident Assistants will have them in the residence halls, Sr. Marianna, Casey Burry, Mary Sokolowski, and Ashley Marchand are all selling the tickets between now and Thursday night. And for all the last minute planners, tickets will be sold at the door. All proceeds from the ticket sales benefit Heifer International and the Tsunami Relief Fund. “The life skills and values that we have learned over our time here at Salve, whether that be short or long, allow us to realize when our fellow humans are in need of assistance. Whether that be from a tragedy of natural disaster or a man-made disaster,” said First Year Experience Assistant and President of the Student Government Association, Stephen Kavanagh. “Participation in the Suitcase Dance by members of the Salve Regina University community demonstrates the humanitarian desire to try to better the welfare of those devasted by the tsunami. It is the responsibility and should be the goal of all members of our university community as well as our global community to work toward a world that is harmonious, just, and merciful.”
