Salve Regina’s film production club Salve Studios will premiere its newest short films, Triangulum and Winter, during its film festival on Sunday April 30th at 7:30 p.m. in Bazarsky.
“It is a film noir, so it’s very much marked by that iconic style of the 1950s,” says Lily Jones of Triangulum. Jones co-directed and co-wrote Triangulum along with Stephanie Menders. “It’s about a young woman who is suspected of murdering her husband,” Jones explains. Audiences can expect everything film noir: mystery, detectives, and a femme fatale.
The other new film called Winter is a drama, following two old friends who contemplate the divide that has grown between them. Other films to be shown include previously premiered horror film The Final Cut, and thriller Second Chance Waltz.
Though these films are short, a good deal of work goes into their production. First, they write an original script. Then, the e-board establishes which two members will act as director and production manager. After establishing the rest of the crew, they have to find students to act in the films. For the most part these students are theater majors, but students from various majors have had acting roles.
Given that everyone involved has their own busy college schedules, filming is done whenever everyone has the time, typically on the weekends. Since the filming is so broken up, continuity is a challenge. As Jones describes, “If you’re a man and you have a beard for three weeks of filming and then all of a sudden you shave, that’s an issue.”
Salve Studios was only founded in the spring of 2015 and has already produced four short films. “I am very proud of all of them,” says Jones. “It’s really exciting to see this showcase of student work.”
